WGHS Context

We are an urban school situated in the suburb of Westville, west of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal. Most of our students are from middle class families but we have had a lot of tragedy within our school this year. Several students have lost parents to cancer, crime and road accidents. Some families have moved to safer areas because of the crime in Westville.
Here is the powerpoint from 2013 outlining our school context.
Issues within our student school community are: family problems e.g divorce, teenage issues like drinking, drugging and sex and relationships. Pressure from parents re achievement, general pressure to achieve high marks, some trouble with bullying and racialism, racialism etc.. We have a local community newspaper that also highlights issues witin our area and the following articles reveal similar issues.
This year the Drama Department worked with Grade 10 students on a project where they had to identify an issue that pertained to themselves, the school community and westville area at large and the students had to research the issue and put on a small theme programme around the issue. Here is the worksheet given to them
Topics chosen were:
plagiarism, it's ok to be different, divorce, respect, attitude & accountability, underage drinking, rape, attitude & motivation,
Girl Power (how girls need to stick up for each other and not be trapped in gender stereotyping) Cyber Bullying, You are who you are etc)
Here is the Project brief and worksheet.
A video of an assembly presentation by one of the Grade 10 groups can be found on the page entitled evidence of work..
