Eco Garden
Vuyiswa Ntshangase
I have really enjoyed working in the garden. We had the teachers helping out, some of the girls from school and it was a good idea. The plant, seeds, soil etc were very expensive, but at least we put in all the effort.
The bad thing about planting was the fact that I never brought gloves and I had to plant with my hands, the soil got stuck in my nails and I had to dig out small plants that had bugs.
The ECO- CLUB worked really hard this year, especially the seniors. The garden turned out well and now we have fresh vegetables growing from our school garden. My favorite one was the lettuce even though I planted the small green plants on the side.
I just hope other students in WGHS get to join ECO with us.
The lesson I learned from this experience was to carry your planting tools and always remember"DIG DOWN DEEPER". ECO-CLUB helps you to notice what happens in nature in our everyday life and its all about the animals, water, food, villages, teenagers, needy kids and our natural plants. All those things that we need in order to survive and also think about the people in our nation, environment and the rest of the world.

ECO CLUB HEATHY LIVING: Gardening
As part of our Eco Clubs Healthy Living project we have incorporated gardening as one of our clubs weekly activities. From our Eco Club fund we buy small plants that we then plant on a plot of soil that we use as our clubs garden and we water them on a weekly basis, having a schedule that says which member will be watering them that week. When the plants are ready to be harvested we then sell them for a profit to the schools tuck-shop or at markets etc.
It’s important that members of a Eco Club gain experience in activities like gardening since there are many benefits to it as you can take those skills that you learn and develop whilst gardening at school and incorporate it into your lifestyle by then starting to garden by yourself because gardening your food means that: it’s cheaper to get the produce that you need, you know exactly what is being done to your food when it is being grown and you understand the importance of living an environmentally friendly life.
Gardening is a practise that leads you to that journey of appreciation with the Earth that we live on and to also appreciate the importance of living a sustainable life.
I would personally like gardening to become a bigger part of our Eco Club and to take it to such a level that our tuck shops are stocked with produce from our garden which improves the help of our learners and gives us as an Eco Club a better status amongst other Eco Clubs in our community.
