Electricity and water
The increasing cost of electricity, the scarcity of clean water and our oceans is a global concern. That's why we've taken in upon ourselves to place many posters and information boards around the school to create an awareness.
Posters in bathrooms are placed to reduce the amount of water that we waste when washing our hands whilst posters for saving electricity are placed next to light switches in all classrooms.
This has proven very affective as even teachers have reduced the amount of times they switch on their classroom lights when it is bright outside. These posters are a constant reminder to everyone that water and electricity has become almost sacred.
We have joined the WESSA "Water Explorers" program. Here is our WGHS progress page.
Attached below is a graph of water and electricity usage of Westville Girls' High School.
We also started a graph using plastic caps that shows the electricity usage and water usage of the school in rands and in kilo-litres and kilo-watts. We have had quite negative feedback though that the students didn't see it or read it or don't know that it is there and yet it is quite large and in your face as you will see in the pictures below.
We have continued with our signage around the school for "switch it off" and also "save water".
